Steam Wand Not Working
Steam Wand Nozzle Cleaning
Symptom: Steam wand produces weak/no steam, does not heat milk properly, created large milk bubbles or fails to create normal or micro milk foam.
Common cause: One or more nozzle holes are clogged with dried milk residue (Bacteria or mineral build up).
Tools
- Clean paper clip
- Clean cloth
- Warm water
- Suitable wrench, if required
Procedure
1. Turn off the steam
Close the steam valve completely. Never remove the nozzle while the wand is hot or pressurized.
2. Allow the wand to cool completely
Wipe the outside of the wand clean. Some brands, such as Schaerer, feature non-burn or black PEEK plastic steam wands.
3. Remove the nozzle
Depending on the machine, unscrew the nozzle by hand or with the appropriate wrench. Do not force it.
4. Clean the nozzle holes
- Inspect all steam outlet holes.
- Straighten a clean paper clip.
- Gently insert the paper clip into each hole to break up dried milk residue.
- Do not force it, enlarge the holes, or use a larger object. The hole size affects steam performance.
5. Soak and rinse
Soak the nozzle in warm water for several minutes. If necessary, use an appropriate espresso-machine milk cleaner (Such as the Schaerer or Urnex Rinza blue liquid Milk Cleaner) according to its instructions. Rinse thoroughly.
6. Reinstall
Screw the nozzle back onto the wand and tighten securely without over tightening.
7. Test
Once the machine reaches normal operating temperature and steam pressure, briefly purge the wand. Confirm that steam flows evenly from all holes, then test with cold milk.
If Steam Is Still Weak
The restriction may be elsewhere in the steam circuit, such as the steam valve, valve seat, wand passage, scale buildup, or a problem with boiler pressure/heating.
Do not continue enlarging or aggressively probing the nozzle holes. If cleaning does not restore proper steam flow, have the machine inspected by a qualified technician.
Prevention: Purge the steam wand immediately after steaming and wipe it clean to prevent milk from drying in or around the nozzle.
